The Story
It was beginning of winter season, we were out on our Winter Training Camp. We completed our night training at about 3 AM, the training task was to develop fording place for vehicles over the river. The night was dark with very little moon light available. We started our journey towards the residential camp area that was about 20 miles from the training site. The road was completely deserted, on left side of the road was a canal with tall, fully grown trees and on the left side was fields with cotton, wheat and sugarcane crops, the view was occasionally interrupted by group of mud houses, constructed by farmers along the road. I told the jeep driver to sit behind and started enjoying the hassle free driving on narrow road along the canal, enjoying silent and beautiful night view, meanwhile, I and my junior officer sharing different jokes and other experiences. Suddenly, we came across a very strange scene, little away from the road, near the bunch of mud houses, we saw a man distinctly having two heads, a chill traveled through my bones while crossing the strange man and leaving him behind, in the dark he looked more like a shadow. The officer accompanying me said ” Sir, have you seen that;” I replied ” Yes I have seen it very clearly”. I applied the brakes and started turning the jeep back, “we must go back him see it again”. The officer replied meekly ” Sir I think we should go back to the camp”. Without caring for his comments and we went to the place, there, we saw a man of about 45-50 years of age was holding a boy of 16-17 year of age and the boy was trying to get out of his grip, in the dark, together, they looked like a man with two heads. I stopped near them, lowering window glass down, I inquired what was the problem, the boy barked at us like a dog, while the middle aged man replied that the boy has been bitten by a mad dog and he is running away. I advised the middle aged man, perhaps, it is rabies and the boy need to be taken to hospital immediately. Today, when I recall this incident, I feel that I did a good thing by returning back and confirming, otherwise, today I have been a believer of ghosts, witches and like.
Lessons
- If you see anything peculiar or extra ordinary thing, always re-confirm it even if you have seen it with your own eyes.
- Believing in God gave me strength to go back and reconfirm the incident, we must give our children religious education so that they can develop strong faith. Whenever, in my life I come across difficult situation, I recall Psalm 23:-
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.
