Search your neighbor

Old Testament

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour’s.

Exodus 20:17

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18

Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you.

Proverbs 3: 29

New Testament

Real Neighbour

Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:37–39

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Luke 10:30-37

In Focus

Living in college hostel, I daily used to walk in front of an adjacent room. On the entrance door, a sticker was pasted that read“Love thy neighbor never get caught”. At that time, I knew a very superficial definition of neighbor. Obviously, the definition of neighbor I knew was “the person living next door”. Perhaps, for hundreds of years before the advent of Christ people only knew the above mentioned definition. Even today very few people understand the true definition of a neighbor; Jesus Christ made the definition of neighbor very clear, it is mentioned in Gospel of Luke Chapter 10. This is a very unique definition; it tells us anyone we meet and who really need our help is our neighbor and need our attention as per Commandments of Old Testament. Secondly, these verses also tell us that neighborhood does not depend on caste, creed, color, race, religion, region etc; rather this concept of neighborhood is truly universal. If this concept of neighborhood is adopted globally, I believe all the sufferings of mankind will end.

May God Bless You
