Sabbath

Sabbath

August 12

 Old Testament

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation

Genesis 2:3

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Exodus 20:8-11

“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;

Isaiah 58:13

New Testament

The Good Shepherd

And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.

Luke 4:16

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Mark 2:27

And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” — that they might accuse him. Then he said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.

Mathew 12:10-13

Point of View

View Point

When I was a student in Engineering College, Instructors always emphasized that students should try to grasp concept instead of remembering the procedures only. Perhaps, people in the days prior to Jesus Christ were sticking to the very literal meaning of the words written in scriptures and their lives were made more miserable by the religious leadership by imposing selective and self created interpretation of scriptures, most of the time for exploitation. Jesus Christ always advocated that people should not be loaded with unnecessary burdens; they should be allowed live simple, peaceful, fulfilling and good life. Spirituality shall make their life more meaningful and fulfilling rather than miserable and non-directional. If we read bible, we find out that Jesus Christ used to attend temple, pray, preach and do good work on Sabbath. As Christians, we should spend this day in a similar manner as was done by Jesus Christ.

May God Bless You
