Verse of the Day
3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd, because he was small in stature.
4 So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, since Jesus was about to pass that way
When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down, for I must stay at your house today.”…
Luke 19: 3-5
Who was Zacchaeus.
Zacchaeus was a descendant of Abraham and was working as a chief tax-collector at Jericho. Tax collectors were despised as traitors, and as being corrupt. Zacchaeus was also considered by public as a greedy, grimy tax-collector . He was also small in physical stature and perhaps he must have been mocked and looked down by his fellows as a short heighted person. Because the lucrative production and export of balsam was centered in Jericho, his position would have carried both importance and wealth.
In-spite of all these short comings, Zacchaeus was a kind, warmhearted and a God fearing person. He must have been ashamed of what he has been doing and there must be a strong desire within him to change. But as happens with many of us, he must not be clear how to come out of this dirt, when he heard about Jesus, a ray of hope must have been generated within him, he must have thought “ Perhaps this is the person who can show me the way out, lets go and see him”.
- Zacchaeus was a rich and well known personality with lot of government powers, his ego must have tried to stop him. But he shunned all his ego and decided to see Jesus.
- There were religious hurdles, Pharisees considered Jesus as a threat to Jewish Customs, meeting such a personality must not be considered a good omen for his carrier. But his desire to see Jesus was much greater than advancement in his carrier.
- There must have been family and social barrier. Parents, brothers, sisters, wife, children, some of them must have advised him to stay away from Jesus. Again his desire to meet Jesus was more important than his relationships.
- When he reached the place, there were physical barriers. A lot of public, his short heighted-ness and perhaps dust, heat etc. But he was so keen to see Jesus that he climbed over a tree to see just a glimpse of Jesus
When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
When we truly seek Jesus Christ, He is quick to respond like he responded to Zacchaeus. In our lives we may seem to be very successful, wealthy, well known and high achievers but it is the Christ, who really make our lives meaningful and peaceful. When Jesus Christ visited Zacchaeus house he said :-
“Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
Lets pray and seek the salvation for our home today, Just try Jesus will reply.
